Men’s Soccer Edged By Calumet-St. Joseph In CCAC Lid-Lifter, 1-0

The Roosevelt men’s soccer team battled valiantly through bad weather and bad luck, but came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision against Calumet-St. Joseph on Friday afternoon as the Lakers opened Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play at Toyota Park.

Roosevelt (1-4-3) had the best of possession in the opening half and missed three opportunities for the contest’s opening goal by a matter of inches. Freshman Ruben Estrada hit the crossbar on a free kick and later in the stanza hit the near post on a laser strike following a left flank run. Freshman Andrew Obamaly, who netted two goals in the Lakers’ last match, was equally unlucky, when his left-footed boot connected with the far post after beating the keeper with a left-to-right blast.

Scoreless at intermission, the Crimson Wave (3-5, 1-0) broke through less than five minutes into the second half when Brian Zimmer settled a service into the box from Jesus Avalos and directed the ball past Roosevelt keeper Jose Ortiz.

The rain that was intermittent over the first 50 minutes, turned into a steady downpour the rest of the match, but it didn’t deter the Lakers, who continued to press hard for the equalizer. The leveling tally never came, though, as the Crimson Wave defense deterred several Roosevelt threats and keeper Fernando Perez made one save down the stretch.

The Lakers will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 25 when they host Olivet Nazarene at Toyota Park at 4:00 p.m.
