Spring breaks students' wallets

While some students may be making traveling plans either to return home or lose their sense of time for a week (Cancun anyone?), I will be puttering around my dorm room and entertaining myself with free streaming documentaries on my laptop.

OK---this is a little melodramatic, I admit, but I'm guessing at least some students can relate. Torch's senior reporter Chris Zois said he can already see himself "grilling cheese sandwiches in pajamas," in his apartment.

Most of the blame, no, all of the blame, lies on my empty wallet. While I'd love to be celebrating my last year of college on the beach sipping margaritas, I have to restrict my budget so that I can stay afloat financially after I graduate.

It's no secret: we're in a recession and college graduates are entering a tough job market.
But not everything is going to Hell in a hand basket. There is hope, you just have to be creative.

So for all of you staying in Chicago, there's at least one thing I suggest you do that won't drain your wallet, but will still help you celebrate that you made it through midterms and have a week of absolutely NO school work.

When you're in the mood to wine and dine, check out a "bring your own booze" restaurant. Before I go to a BYOB restaurant I always swing by Trader Joe's for "three buck chuck," or their house wine, which is only $2.99. Considering this price with dinner, you can easily stay below paying $12 per person. BYOB nights make for a lot of great memories on the town, trust me.

Use this break to catch up with friends who thought you dropped off the face of the earth because you became a slave to your homework [if this doesn't apply to you I am absolutely envious].

I'll certainly indulge my ability to spread my wings and socialize. And cherish those days when you get to sleep in; if you have a morning class, and are a night owl like me, then you know what I'm talking about.

Regardless of your spring break agenda, enjoy the break---you deserve it. And as all good public announcements remind, have fun and be safe.
