Having safe and affordable living arrangements is a must when attending a university. Most students live in either a provided dorm or have off-campus apartments.

Roosevelt's student resident policy requires that all freshmen that do not live at home are required to live in university housing.

According to Director of Residence Life Angela Ryan, Roosevelt currently houses 900 students. Roosevelt's students began moving into their rooms last Thursday.

The university currently has two dormitories and one that is currently being built as part of the "Vertical Campus" project. Construction will be complete in 2012.

It will not only hold a dorm for Roosevelt's growing student body but also classrooms, labs, a dining hall, fitness facilities and student services. According to Roosevelt Review, Roosevelt's President, Chuck Middleton wrote "Since this building will be connected to the Auditorium building at several levels, some students may well be able to avoid going outside for a whole semester, never taking off their bunny slippers, even when they go to class."

The University Center is the main dormitory for freshman. It was officially opened in the fall of 2004 and is located at 525 S. State St. The UC houses Roosevelt students, in addition to students from DePaul University and Columbia College Chicago.

Kara Lee, a public relations major, is a returning resident in the University Center. Lee decided to move back into the University Center again because of her enjoyable experiences there.

"I like the University Center. The security is perfect and it is nice and clean. I feel at home," Lee said.

The University center houses a total of 1,700 students, providing 24/7 security, laundry facilities, multimedia and game rooms. Lee decided to move to the Roosevelt dorms rather than stay with her family in Springfield.

The second dormitory is Fornelli Hall, 55 E. Washington St. Often referred to as ROW -Roosevelt on Washington - it opened in the fall of 2008.

Some students also look to outside student housing options. Tailor Lofts provides off- campus student living at 315 S. Peoria.

"One of the things that makes us different is we provide apartment style living versus dorm living," said Lindsay Quigley, a Tailor Lofts employee.

Students choose among studio and 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-bedroom apartments and have the chance to live with students from other Chicago universities. Quigley also mentioned that the students are more independent.

Gina Muratori, an UIC student, lives with three roommates.

"I absolutely love my apartment. It is completely furnished and in a good neighborhood," Muratori said.
