I remember I took a class at College of DuPage and it was a International Film Mavericks class. We watched films by international directors who helped change cinema. I asked if we were going to watch any Del Toro films. I was told that we were not and my teacher believed Del Toro's film "Pan's Labyrinth" was the most overrated film since 1990. I could not believe what I was hearing. Del Toro's film is one of the most original works of the last decade. The film is brilliant because it works on so many levels. You go into it believing it will be a whimsical fantasy, but it delves into a social-political film that achieves so much more. It's a haunting mixture of history, horror and fantasy that works well on every level perfectly. Del Toro is very patient with the camera, I am marveled at how he has taken all these genre's and seamed them together. The films technical aspects from the cinematography to the score created this haunting picture of 1940's Spain. I say I gave up on the Oscars when "Little Miss Sunshine" won for Best Original Screenplay opposed to this. It's a meticulous masterpiece that works everywhere.
