Needle users are welcome at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

The first Tuesday of each month, the MCA hosts the event Stitch 'n' Bitch. This event provides a place where those who are passionate about knitting, crocheting and other thread-centric activities can come together to gab, share tips and possibly have a cocktail or two.

"It is a great way for people to sit, talk and meet other people with a common interest," said Amy Corle, the museum's director of visitor services/manager of internal marketing.

Stitch 'n' Bitch is part of the museum's Tuesday Evenings in the Café series. The event begins at 5:30 p.m., and it is always free. Of course, the MCA is open and free during this event, as well. However, do not leave all of the cash at home.

The museum's store is open during Stitch 'n' Bitch. And, if a person works up a hunger while knitting, he or she can stop by Puck's, the museum's café. This eatery features food by celebrated chef Wolfgang Puck. Stitch 'n' Bitch also features a bar with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks available for purchase.

To fulfill someone's thirst for knowledge, the museum invites a different Chicago-based artist who works with fiber to attend the event each month. This artist will sit among the other attendees and work on their latest handcrafted project. He or she will also be available for conversations or questions about the art of knitting, crocheting, etc.

The March 2009 Stitch 'n' Bitch will feature the guest artist Georgina Verde. According to Verde's Web site, www.georginaverde.com, she is an artist who works "with a variety of media including craft, video, ready-mades and found objects."

While a person is expected to bring his or her own needles, hooks, yarn, etc., this event is not just for the experienced thread enthusiast. All levels of knowledge are encouraged to come to Stitch 'n' Bitch. And, this event is not just for women either.

"Men, women and people of all ages come. Everyone there has different levels [of knowledge]. Everyone helps each other out," Corle said.

The MCA is not the only location hosting Stitch 'n' Bitch events; it's an organization that extends far beyond the Chicago city limits. The Web site, www.stitchnbitch.org, highlights groups that are meeting around the world. All of these groups encourage the idea of sharing techniques and enjoying a crafty hobby in a group setting.

But, Stitch 'n' Bitch is not just about picking up some knitting needles and spending time on a current project, it's also about just having a fun time with friends.
